WHO Secures Significant Funding for Global Health Initiatives
In a remarkable show of international support, the World Health Organization (WHO) has successfully garnered nearly $700 million in new funding commitments from various European nations, philanthropic foundations, and other contributors. Additionally, $300 million in previously pledged funds was reaffirmed.
This announcement was made during the WHO Investment Round Signature Event at the World Health Summit held in Berlin, co-hosted by Germany, France, and Norway. The commitments underscore the pressing need for financial investments to enhance health outcomes globally.
The WHO’s Strategic Vision: 2025-2028
The global health strategy known as WHO’s Fourteenth General Programme of Work for 2025-2028 received approval from all 194 Member States during the recent World Health Assembly in May. This marks a pivotal moment as it is accompanied by the launch of WHO’s inaugural Investment Round aimed at securing predictable and flexible funding necessary for effective collaboration with countries to implement this strategic vision.
Key Leaders Show Support
Among those expressing their commitment were German Chancellor Olaf Scholz; Prime Ministers Kristen Michal of Estonia, Milojko Spajić of Montenegro, and Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway; along with representatives from several nations including Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Spain and the United Kingdom. Notable figures such as Wellcome CEO John-Arne Røttingen; European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen; Gates Foundation Chair Bill Gates; and Gavi CEO Sania Nishtar also participated actively during this high-profile event.
Germany’s Commitment to Global Health
Chancellor Scholz announced that Germany would contribute nearly $400 million over four years to support WHO initiatives—this includes more than $260 million designated as new voluntary funding. He emphasized that “The work done by WHO benefits everyone globally,” highlighting that sustainable financing is essential for planning ahead while maintaining flexibility to respond effectively when needed.
Pledges from Philanthropic Organizations
Global health foundations also made significant pledges: Wellcome committed $50 million while organizations like Resolve to Save Lives and the World Diabetes Foundation each pledged or reaffirmed their commitment with contributions totaling $10 million.
Anil Soni, CEO of the WHO Foundation announced an additional commitment of $50 million towards this Investment Round which includes part of a larger pledge amounting to $57 million from Foundation S and Sanofi aimed at bolstering WHO’s global health agenda. Contributions are also expected from private sector partners such as Boehringer Ingelheim and Novo Nordisk totaling at least another $30 million.
African Nations Join Forces
A number of African governments have already made substantial pledges towards this initiative—16 governments thus far have shown their support. During discussions in Berlin on behalf of the African Union Ministerial delegation led by Mauritania’s Minister confirmed ongoing backing for successful outcomes related to these investment efforts alongside announcements from France Spain UK along with further commitments anticipated from Gates Foundation.
A Call for Collective Action
The Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus concluded proceedings by expressing gratitude towards donors stating: “We recognize that we are making these requests amidst competing priorities coupled with limited resources.” He urged every Member State along with partners worldwide emphasizing that every contribution matters significantly toward achieving collective goals.”
