- There are several things I wish I had known before undertaking my lengthy Amtrak overnight journeys in 2021.

In October 2021, I booked a round-trip ticket aboard Amtrak’s sleeper train connecting New York City and Miami. Over these journeys, I clocked in a total of 60 hours on the rails.
During my outbound journey to Miami, I occupied a $500 roomette—a compact private space measuring about 20 square feet. This cozy setting featured a fold-out table and two chairs that convert into beds, along with an upper bunk that stowed away from the ceiling when not in use.
The return leg of my trip offered an upgraded option: a bedroom accommodation costing around $1,000 and providing a more spacious private area of approximately 45 square feet complete with its own bathroom—a luxury compared to the roomette!
Even though my overall experience was enjoyable, there were critical aspects regarding this travel mode I wish I’d considered prior to departure. Here’s what I learned:
The rides were far bumpier than I’d anticipated—akin to turbulence experienced during flights where you’re fastened into your seat for extended periods. The combination of motion sickness and restless nights could have been mitigated had I packed medication beforehand for nausea relief.
I attempted sleeping on both upper and lower bunks within the roomette but found myself enduring jolts throughout both experiences. Ultimately, settling onto the lower bunk proved less jarring; thus next time around I’ll simply opt out of using the upper berth altogether.
