A domain speculator who acquires web addresses with the expectation of future political campaigns recently scored a significant profit by selling HarrisWalz.com for an impressive $15,000.
The individual behind this sale, Jeremy Green Eche, had bought the domain four years ago along with 14 other domains linked to Kamala Harris’ name, all in anticipation of her eventual candidacy for the presidency.
In a notable turn of events, Harris has now appointed Tim Walz as her running mate, prompting an anonymous buyer to swoop in on the domain shortly thereafter.
The Art of Domain Speculation
Eche is professionally known as a trademark attorney; however, he also operates a platform for trading domain names and serves as an investor in this sector. Interestingly, he does not shy away from calling himself both a “cybersquatter” and “domain squatter,” terms that typically carry negative connotations but accurately describe his venture.
“I embrace those labels because they reflect what I do,” he shared during an interview with NPR.
This isn’t Eche’s first lucrative domain deal; previously he sold ClintonKaine.com in 2016 for $15,000. Initially hoping to sell it directly to Hillary Clinton’s team at around $10,000—only to be offered $2,000—he eventually accepted an offer from another party that turned out to be affiliated with Donald Trump; they utilized that site for anti-Clinton propaganda.
Eche invests roughly $10 per domain and incurs annual renewal fees while betting on his foresight regarding potential presidential candidates—a strategy that’s been proving fruitful thus far.
The purchaser of HarrisWalz.com is reported to be supportive of Kamala Harris and did not want history repeating itself from the recent episode involving contentious domains during the last election cycle.
“It’s akin to someone who excelled at the Olympics eight years ago but missed out on competition more recently only to return triumphantly once again. I consider myself somewhat legendary in this niche brand of cybersquatting,” Eche remarked proudly.
