Dan Stevens: A Year of Transformation
As 2023 progresses, Dan Stevens is already making waves with an impressive array of characters.
This August has seen him embody diverse roles—from King Kong’s dentist, to a morally dubious former cop who becomes involved with vampires, and most recently, a mysterious German resort owner crooning on a flute.
The eclectic nature of these performances—featured in productions like “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” “Abigail,” and “Cuckoo”—is typical for Stevens. He enjoys dabbling in various genres, whether playing the literary figure Charles Dickens or taking on terribly whimsical roles like that of Disney royalty.
The Power of Declining Roles
“I firmly believe that one’s career is shaped just as much by what you refuse as by what you accept,” says Stevens during an interview with Business Insider.
Stevens has openly expressed his capability to decline enticing offers when necessary. His departure from the beloved series “Downton Abbey,” where he effectively ended Matthew Crawley’s storyline to explore other creative avenues, shocked fans but marked a pivotal step towards new artistic endeavors. Following his relocation from Britain to America heightened both exposure and opportunity for him within diverse projects.
“In the States, there exists this refreshing willingness to embrace actors taking on unexpected characters, which was incredibly appealing for me,” he explains. Ultimately, it prompted him towards “a far more intriguing career route.”
The Villainy in ‘Cuckoo’
This shift brought forth “Cuckoo,” an unsettling thriller where he portrays Herr König—the oddball flutist with sinister motives targeting Hunter Schafer’s character. His performance encapsulates a delightfully chaotic spirit that sets it apart from his earlier days on “Downton Abbey.”
Over recent years, instead of opting for conventional roles, Stevens has embraced challenges that push boundaries:
“Choosing these kinds of parts often comes with its share of anxiety but reveals thrilling possibilities.” He reflects back on leaving “Downton Abbey”: “I ventured into uncertainty without clear insights about what awaited me—a fascinating journey I have been unraveling progressively.”
A Decade Since Leaving ‘Downton’
A Reflection After Ten Years!
Your exit from ‘Downton Abbey’ was over ten years ago. In hindsight, do you view any aspect differently?
No significant changes here! What stands out most is how affectionately fans continue connecting with it—they are still discovering it today! I receive numerous messages weekly from viewers surprised at specific plot twists even after years since its airing—a testament about how enduring its appeal is remains something I cherish deeply!
Do you maintain connections with your former castmates?
I occasionally catch up with some old friends; every now and then someone visits Los Angeles—and we try to reconnect whenever possible during their trip!
Diving headfirst into uncertainty while departing ‘Downton’; did fear accompany your leap?
Absolutely—it was petrifying! But therein lies part of its excitement!
Regrets concerning past choices—in retrospect do any stand out negatively?
All decisions reflect my values at those moments—I strive not letting regret claim too much space psychologically! Whether or not certain things succeed doesn’t diminish their value if they stemmed intuitively—you usually have compelling reasons motivating whatever involvement occurs.
