In the South of Market district of San Francisco, locals have expressed their frustrations about being regularly disturbed during the night due to relentless honking emanating from parked Waymo autonomous taxis. These driverless vehicles gathered in the parking lot after completing their shifts, leading to unexpected disruptions for nearby residents.
Recently, Waymo announced that they had discovered and rectified this issue. According to a spokesperson for the company, “We recently launched an innovative feature designed to help prevent collisions at low speeds by alerting other vehicles with honks when they come too close while reversing.” The spokesperson added, “While we intended it as a safety measure throughout urban areas, we didn’t foresee its frequent activation within our own parking facilities.”
The representative also mentioned that subsequent updates have been made so these electric cars can minimize noise levels moving forward for those living adjacent to operational sites. This update is sure to be met with relief by local residents who previously reported sleepless nights plagued by disruptive sounds.
“At first there was just an occasional honk here and there,” explained Christopher Cherry, one local resident near where the cars are stored. “But as more and more vehicles started arriving nightly, it escalated into chaos,” he shared with NBC Bay Area.

The same outlet highlighted Cherry’s documentation effort involving over twelve episodes where these vehicle horns disrupted surrounding homes at all times—day or night. He lamented how distracting these noises were during working hours but noted that disturbances early next morning were particularly aggravating: “Being jolted awake around four certainly isn’t conducive.”
In light of no recent disturbances since news broke regarding software modifications added on behalf of enhancing neighborhood peace as per Cherry’s shared remarks post-update reflect hopefulness: “So far today seems quiet; fingers crossed it’s truly been resolved!”
