I found myself surprisingly captivated by the elevators during my stay. The Conrad Orchard Singapore features four elevators that traverse not only vertical spaces but also evoke a sense reminiscent to times past.
This striking 12-story structure, crafted by architect John Portman in 1982, originally welcomed guests as an InterContinental before transitioning to Regent and most recently adopting Hilton’s prestigious Conrad brand in 2023. Portman’s design philosophy mirrored that of his other renowned edifices like Hyatt Regency Atlanta and Marriott Renaissance Center Detroit—with upper floors and dining options arranged like a majestic bird’s ribcage linked by an architectural spine where sleek glass elevators glide up and down. As I navigated past lush arrangements of orchids into this stately dome, I summoned one.
