Legal Proceedings Against Former AT&T Executive End in Mistrial
A mistrial was declared today regarding the case of Paul La Schiazza, ex-President of AT&T Illinois, who faced allegations of bribing an influential ally of a state legislator to secure advantageous legislation for his company.
“The jury has reported that they are at an impasse and unable to reach a unanimous verdict. For the reasons articulated on the record, the court announces a mistrial,” stated US District Judge Robert Gettleman in a formal order issued today following proceedings in the Northern District of Illinois.
Possibility of Retrial Looms for La Schiazza
The prospect remains that La Schiazza may be subject to another trial. In addition, AT&T had previously agreed to pay $23 million in 2022 as part of a settlement concerning a federal investigation into alleged wrongdoing associated with efforts to sway former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan’s decisions.
The Justice Department revealed that AT&T “acknowledged it facilitated payments totaling $22,500 through an intermediary linked to Madigan back in 2017,” as noted in their announcement from October 2022.
