Cybertruck Faces New Recall Due to Camera Issues

Musk’s Vision for Mirrorless Design
Elon Musk initially envisioned his “favorite car” as being devoid of physical mirrors; however, he conceded in 2021 due to legal requirements stating that side mirrors were necessary. Interestingly, he noted that these mirrors were designed for easy removal by owners. Various video guides suggest it takes roughly two minutes to convert a hefty 6,660 lbs Cybertruck into a mirrorless model. Nevertheless, most states mandate vehicles to have side view mirrors.
A History of Recalls and Issues
Prior to this software update, the rearview camera malfunction affected all Cybertrucks produced between November 13, 2023 and September 24, 2024. This latest recall marks the fifth instance since its delayed launch in November 2023. Previous recalls addressed issues such as problems with its oversized single windshield wiper, defective plastic trim components, and an accelerator pedal malfunctioning after being pressed down. In January alone, the Cybertruck was part of a broader Tesla recall affecting over two million vehicles due to an issue with warning light font size being too small.
The Popularity Amidst Recalls
Despite averaging one recall every two months since its introduction, the Cybertruck has emerged as one of America’s most sought-after electric pickup trucks. Although Tesla does not disclose specific sales figures publicly, data from NHTSA suggests nearly all currently operational Cybertrucks fall within this timeframe—indicating sales below 30,000 units thus far—more than double what was sold during previous recalls.
