Travis Gienger Triumphs Again at the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off
For the second year in a row and for the fourth time Travis Gienger has claimed victory at the 51st Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off. This year’s champion pumpkin, affectionately named Rudy, tipped the scales at an impressive 2,471 pounds. To put that weight into perspective, that’s equivalent to twice the weight of a grizzly bear, half as heavy as a rhinoceros, two-thirds of an average car’s weight, or enough to create approximately 74,794 pumpkin spice lattes.
As part of his winnings, Gienger will receive nine dollars per pound in prize money, along with a champion grower ring and jacket. He will also enjoy a two-night stay at the Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay, California—home to this annual competition every October. The horticulture educator from Minnesota previously set records with his 2023 entry weighing in at 2,749 pounds and was recognized by Guinness World Records. Additionally, he holds the title for creating the largest jack-o’-lantern by circumference—a stunning eagle design measuring 242 inches around.
Reflecting on his journey this season after clinching victory once more, Gienger remarked: “I didn’t think I’d have anything come June. If you had talked to me then I would have said our weather is far too wet and cold.”
The Annual Celebration of Pumpkins in Half Moon Bay
The renowned Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival attracts thousands each year for its array of pumpkin-themed festivities. This picturesque coastal town is celebrated for its expansive pumpkin patches.
The Evolution of Giant Pumpkin Cultivation
The trend of cultivating enormous pumpkins began gaining traction during the 1970s but truly exploded when growers started producing pumpkins over 1,000 pounds around 1996. Growers exchange specialized seeds annually to foster these colossal gourds. Typically requiring over 100 days to mature fully allows them ample time compared to other crops. Their thick rinds provide superior protection against pests compared to other vegetables that are more water-dense.

The Genetics Behind Record-Breaking Pumpkins
Most record-setting pumpkins are derived from Dill’s Atlantic Giants, which have been selectively bred for size enhancement over generations. Some previous winners may possess genetic advantages such as larger vascular systems or innate abilities that allow them faster growth rates while resisting pests and absorbing nutrients more efficiently from their environment.
Nutritional Benefits Beyond Aesthetics
When not being transformed into festive decorations or flavoring seasonal beverages like lattes,
pumpkins offer numerous health benefits.
They are rich in essential nutrients that bolster immune function,
promote heart health,
and their versatility makes them suitable for various culinary applications.
