SpaceX Proposes Enhancements to Starlink for Gigabit Internet Access
SpaceX is currently pursuing regulatory approval for modifications to its Starlink satellite network, which the company asserts will facilitate gigabit-per-second broadband services. In an application submitted to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on October 11, SpaceX asserts that these proposed changes will allow the Gen2 system to provide high-speed, low-latency internet access and widespread mobile connectivity for all Americans and billions of individuals worldwide who currently lack sufficient broadband options.
Enhancing Orbital Configuration for Sustainability
The company has indicated that it aims to implement “several minor yet impactful adjustments” regarding the orbital setup and operational parameters of its Gen2 satellite authorization. These updates are intended to enhance space sustainability, adapt more effectively to changing demand patterns, and optimize spectrum sharing with other users.
Adjustments in Satellite Altitude
A key aspect of SpaceX’s proposal involves lowering the operational altitudes of its satellites from their current levels—specifically from 525 km, 530 km, and 535 km down to new heights of 480 km, 485 km, and 475 km respectively. This reconfiguration is expected to increase both the maximum number of orbital planes available as well as the number of satellites per plane while maintaining a cap on total second-generation satellites at or below 29,988 units. To date, the FCC has granted approval for up to 7,500 Gen2 satellites.
