Well done if you managed to solve today’s purple category without relying solely on luck; it was indeed quite peculiar. I certainly needed some good fortune myself since the connection—WORDS THAT SEEM LONGER WHEN WRITTEN THAN SPOKEN—is rather unusual. For instance, isn’t this somewhat reliant on understanding language nuances? If one is unaware that PHARAOH has a silent second A sound might mispronounce it as PHAR-A-OH. However this applies equally to KNOW or TRUE—it all boils down to English! I’m not convinced PHARAOH actually appears longer when written compared to spoken form at all. Perhaps WORCESTERSHIRE could fit into this category but only if you’ve never visited England before—it feels arbitrary.
My approach was somewhat related; I focused instead on missing syllables although my guesses were more hopeful than informed by then I’d lost track of what else might fit there. The other challenge came from my blue group which included CALCULUS—a term I’d never encountered regarding DENTIST CONCERNS—apparently another name for TARTAR so having both terms seems redundant overall.
