“It transformed my perspective. I no longer felt compelled to pursue relationships or marriage because society insists we should have children or reproduce,” Mýa conveyed to host Angela Yee.
The pressure placed upon women regarding their relationship status weighs heavily, something she finds problematic.
“Why are we conditioned to believe that we must be chosen or validated through marriage?” she pondered, indicating how celibacy encouraged greater appreciation for herself instead of searching for approval from others.
A notable contributor to this need for personal transformation arose from how she was perceived as a sex icon throughout her career. This influenced her choice to lead a more private existence compared to other public figures.
“Growing up as somewhat of a sex symbol means absorbing various perceptions and navigating those complexities early on,” explained Mýa. “The image people see often contrasts sharply with your true self, creating complications, especially in romantic pursuits or social interactions with fellow celebrities.”
