Although its primary use centers around playing classic DOS games, its journey has been anything but smooth. Originally launched over ten years ago, it catered quietly to a niche audience but faced numerous hurdles throughout its development as it tried to comply with App Store guidelines following previous breaches that led to tensions regarding potential removal.
The Rollercoaster Journey Before Re-entry
This saga took a downturn in 2021 when heightened visibility from social media discussions led to its complete removal from the App Store due to violations against Apple’s protocols.
A Shift in Apple’s Policies: New Opportunities for Emulators
However, early this year marked significant adjustments in Apple’s App Store regulations, notably including the sanctioned introduction of “retro game emulators.” These changes have paved the way for several functional console emulators such as Delta and RetroArch that operate similarly across all platforms today.
The Challenge with PC Games Emulation
Yet when Chaoji Li—iDOS’s developer—and other developers focused on vintage PC emulations sought similar approval for seminal titles running on MS-DOS or non-console systems, they encountered resistance from Apple. The tech giant stated these applications were not classified as retro console emulators under their revised policies and maintained they contravened rules designed to deter sidestepping their platform restrictions by running external applications.
This evolving landscape leaves many enthusiasts hopeful that classic computing experiences will find renewed life within mobile environments.
