Introducing Populus: A Trailblazer in Sustainable Hospitality
Situated in the heart of Denver, Populus is set to redefine eco-friendly accommodations as the first carbon-positive hotel in the United States. Officially opening its doors at the bustling intersection of West Colfax Avenue and 14th Street, directly across from Civic Center Park, this innovative establishment combines sustainability with striking architectural design by renowned firm Studio Gang.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability has become a key focus across various sectors, particularly within hospitality. While many establishments strive for carbon neutrality, Populus takes it a step further by actively working towards being carbon-positive. “Denver is celebrated for its stunning landscapes and outdoor activities,” said George Prine, general manager of Populus. “In recent years, it has also emerged as a culinary and cultural hub that prioritizes sustainability—values that are embodied at our hotel.”
Architectural Marvel Meets Natural Beauty
The hotel’s exterior features an eye-catching white facade inspired by Colorado’s native Aspen trees (Populus tremuloides), adorned with over 65 uniquely shaped windows that provide guests with breathtaking views of both the State Capitol and the majestic Rocky Mountains. Inside, curved hammock-like benches extend from many windows while serene minimalist decor showcases earthy tones and natural textures made from recycled materials—some headboards crafted from fallen pine trees.
The immersive experience continues throughout; elevators play recordings of natural sounds and bird songs captured in Rocky Mountain National Park while pressed wildflowers decorate walls within each guest room and suite.
Culinary Delights on Every Floor
The ground floor—or what they refer to as the “forest floor”—hosts Pasque restaurant where diners can savor fresh seasonal dishes amidst warm wooden tones. Meanwhile, Stellar Jay rooftop restaurant offers shareable plates featuring wild game alongside fresh produce and seafood cooked over open flames complemented by handcrafted cocktails—all enjoyed against stunning city vistas from its grassy terrace.
A Positive Impact on Nature
“Populus not only enhances Denver’s skyline but also fosters authentic connections through its unique dining experiences while giving back to our cherished environment,” Prine elaborated. As part of their extensive sustainability efforts, more than 70,000 trees have been planted in Gunnison County with plans for an additional tree planted for every night booked at the hotel. Furthermore, all energy used is sourced from renewable resources along with a commitment to zero-waste dining practices which include composting food waste delivered directly to local farms.
