The trend of artificial intelligence impacting employment isn’t a recent phenomenon; over the last two years, numerous tech giants have announced substantial layoffs to redirect resources toward AI innovation. For instance, Google reduced its workforce by 12,000 employees last year—accounting for 6% of its staff—as it intensified its focus on AI initiatives.
In May 2023, IBM revealed plans to pause hiring for positions susceptible to automation by AI. This decision affected approximately 26,000 jobs within various departments such as human resources and other non-client-facing sectors.
The effects of AI extend directly to software engineering roles as well.
Although advances in AI have facilitated productivity enhancements through code generation and debugging assistance; industry professionals interviewed by Business Insider anticipate that the need for software engineers will decline. They believe this reduction will be driven by increasing reliance on efficient programming practices brought about by evolving technologies. As such, they have emphasized the importance of working intelligently to preserve their career opportunities.
A Shift Towards Streamlined Development Teams
According to Arpita Kaushik—a data scientist at Rocket Mortgage—AI tools like ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot significantly alleviate workload for professionals like herself. She pointed out that organizations can operate with smaller teams without sacrificing productivity standards.
“I foresee there being a transformation in how we approach software engineering jobs,” she remarked. “In future scenarios where five engineers would typically suffice, you may only require four.”
This perspective was echoed by Aditya Swami from Hatcher+, a venture capital firm based in Singapore. He noted that larger organizations would particularly exhibit noticeable declines in personnel numbers within their software development teams.
“This shift is inevitable,” he stated confidently while emphasizing the need for specialized expertise among surviving candidates within this competitive sector.”

The challenge isn’t limited solely to available job positions plummeting; Kaushik highlighted how enhanced utilization of AI raises thresholds for hiring interns and entry-level positions dramatically today compared with prior expectations inherent within those roles.
“Newcomers must broaden their skill sets rapidly—many tasks once suited purely for seasoned developers can now be achieved using advanced technology,” she elaborated further!
