This progress stems from decades of advocacy efforts focused on community involvement and education aimed at eliminating this harmful tradition while aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 5.3. Thus, it is imperative to uphold these legal protections.
“Maintaining this ban is congruent with The Gambia’s international obligations aimed at preventing harmful practices against women and girls. The urgency for ongoing advocacy promoting gender equality persists alongside efforts aimed at combatting violence targeting women everywhere — reinforcing existing gains toward accomplishing our objectives around ending FGM definitively remains paramount.
