A fossil enthusiast recently made a significant discovery while venturing through the rural landscapes of Mississippi—the state's inaugural confirmed mammothtusk. However, unearthing this rare find was just the beginning of a series of obstacles in its recovery.
While woolly mammoths and mastodons are often celebrated in popular culture, they weren't the sole elephant ancestors inhabiting North America. Interestingly, they were not even the largest species; that title belongs to the Columbian mammoth. Towering nearly 14 feet at shoulder height and weighing up to 10 tons, Mammuthus columbi roamed these lands until their extinction approximately 12,700 years ago. In present-day Mississippi, fewer Columbian mammoths settled due to their grazing preferences for grasslands. Nevertheless, there is archaeological evidence suggesting that these majestic creatures did venture into the Deep South—fossilized teeth findings over time attest to this fact. As reported on August 13 by The Clarion-Ledger, Templeton aimed to unearth new fossils near Jackson when he noticed an unusually large artifact protruding from the mud and sandy bank of a creek.
“I felt an exhilarating sense when I spotted it; I immediately recognized it as a tusk,” Templeton recounted to local reporters.
Initially doubting that such an extraordinary specimen could belong to a mammoth given its scarcity in Mississippi's history, he speculated it might be from one of its smaller cousins—the mastodon. However, after reaching out to experts at the Mississippi State Geological Survey (MSGS), they clarified his suspicions.
“Based on observations about its substantial curvature, we suspected this massive tusk belonged exclusively to a Columbian mammoth rather than being linked with more commonly found mastodons,” stated researchers from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) in an official announcement.
