A collaborative effort by a group of archaeologists and researchers has led to the remarkable discovery of approximately 2,600-year-old gold coins, believed to represent the wages of an unidentified mercenary. These coins were found in a small vessel at the ancient Greek settlement known as Notion, situated in western Turkey. This significant find was made by the Notion Archaeological Project in July 2023, with official dissemination approved by Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism recently.

Understanding Darics
As explained by University of Michigan archaeologist Christopher Ratté, each coin features a depiction of a kneeling archer, which is emblematic of the Persian daric—an esteemed gold coin produced during the reign of the Persian Empire.
It is suggested that these coins were minted in Sardis, located about 60 miles northeast from Notion. The collection will significantly contribute to our understanding regarding both history and timeline associated with Persian darics.
