Instagram Trials New Mapping Feature Similar to Snap Maps
Instagram is currently piloting an innovative feature that bears a striking resemblance to Snap Maps.
Functionality Overview
This new tool enables users on Instagram to share text and video updates positioned on a map corresponding to the locations where those updates were captured. Friends can view this map collaboratively, with their own posts appearing side by side. Essentially, this replicates the functionality of Snap Maps, which debuted in 2017.
Privacy Considerations
The notable distinction at present appears to be Instagram’s more constrained privacy options. Users need to select a “specific group of individuals” for location sharing—this could include “Close Friends or just followers they reciprocate,” as explained by Christine Pai from Meta in an interview with The Verge. In contrast, Snapchat allows broader visibility with public posts on its Snap Maps.
