The Internet Archive has resumed operations in a read-only format following a cyber incident that temporarily disabled the digital library and its Wayback Machine feature last week. On October 9th, the site experienced a data breach alongside a DDoS attack, resulting in the theft of a user authentication database containing 31 million unique records.
According to founder Brewster Kahle, the Internet Archive is now operational in what he describes as a “temporary, read-only state.” He noted that while it is safe to use, further maintenance may be necessary, which could lead to additional suspensions.
Users can still access the Wayback Machine to explore an extensive collection of 916 billion archived web pages; however, capturing new web pages for archiving is currently unavailable. Kahle and his team are actively working on restoring full functionality at Archive.org.
