Inhabitants of the embattled Kursk region have reached out for aid from President Vladimir Putin, asserting that local military leaders are downplaying the severity of conflicts raging around them.
A video statement shared on Thursday featured over 30 individuals from Sudzhansky district, voicing their concerns that the president is being misinformed regarding how critical conditions are for civilians amid increasing military engagement by Ukrainian forces.
“There’s a distortion of facts leading to fatalities among local residents. The Chief of General Staff recently assured you that everything is under control,” one person declared in this video snippet translated by various news outlets. “However, intense clashes are occurring right now within Sudzhansky and Korenevsky districts.”
This footage was spread through Native Sudzha—a Telegram channel focused on regional updates.
Life Interrupted: Evacuation and Desperation
The public appeal painted a dire picture; many citizens find themselves homeless due to Russia’s escalating conflict with Ukraine. They reported being more reliant on social media platforms like Telegram than any official communication for real-time updates.
Numerous evacuees mentioned they had no chance to collect identification or personal belongings during their hurried withdrawal and criticized authorities for not anticipating Ukraine’s buildup at their borders.
“We have been left alone with children—no place to go, lacking compensation or resources—we fled with nothing but our clothes,” shared one woman according to translations provided by CNN.
Another gentleman directed comments straight toward Putin regarding residents stranded amidst hostilities in Guevo—a town within Sudzha—where evacuation efforts seemed nonexistent according to concerned locals.
Reports suggest Guevo may now be under Ukrainian control alongside other Russian settlements.
Neither Russia’s Defense Ministry nor representatives from President Putin’s office responded promptly when Business Insider sought clarification outside regular working hours.
Incursion into Russian Territory
On Wednesday, Kyiv’s military initiated an unprecedented operation targeting Kursk; sources noted sighting Ukrainian armored units as deep as nine miles within Russian boundaries.
Russia claimed that around 1,000 Ukrainian troops engaged this offensive utilizing approximately 40 armored vehicles—including tanks—which prompted Kremlin officials labeling it as a “large-scale provocation.”
