In an interview with Italy’s La Repubblica, Bacares revealed that she and Lynch were awoken around 4 a.m. on Monday due to a sudden jolt as their yacht tilted dramatically in rough waters.
The 57-year-old initially dismissed her concerns and ventured out of bed to investigate the situation further. However, her peace was shattered when glass suddenly broke all around them amidst chaotic circumstances.
Bacares incurred injuries from stepping on sharp shards during this traumatic event, resulting in confinement to a wheelchair for recovery; she also has bandages indicating additional injuries across various parts of her body.
The luxurious 183-foot-long superyacht was accommodating 22 passengers when it capsized early on Monday near Porticello Harbor in Sicily. Reports indicate six people—including both Mike Lynch and his daughter—continue to be unaccounted for while authorities have reported recovering one deceased individual from the site.
According to news agency Ansa from Italy, witnesses indicated that a severe water spout—a type of tornado over water—struck unexpectedly during turbulent weather conditions affecting that area. Their statements suggested that as storms intensified, the mast broke while moored there; this catastrophic failure contributed heavily toward its destabilization leading up to its tragic sinking.
Rescue teams are currently investigating reports suggesting victims might be trapped within approximately 50 meters below sea level inside wreckage.
