In my life, I have always aspired to foster connections among individuals. It drives me to envision a space that transcends socio-economic boundaries and personal identities, where everyone feels valued and understood. This vision culminated in 2022 when I initiated the first El Teteo party in Los Angeles, motivated by a longing for experiences reminiscent of my upbringing in New York City.
The Quest for Connection
Feeling nostalgic, I desperately sought a link to my heritage and community. The essence of El Teteo stems from teachings reinforcing joy amidst struggle and perseverance. For me, community is about gathering with loved ones—whether it involves beach chairs outside an apartment complex or simple seating arrangements at a park beneath a bridge. In Dominican slang, ‘Teteo’ encapsulates this spirit of casual assembly; it emphasizes that all that’s required for a vibrant gathering is lively music, good company, some beverages—and sometimes delicious food. These moments are precious—they’re what bind us as part of our cultural lineage.
A New Scene on the West Coast
As someone hailing from New York, the absence of energetic clubbing experiences left me feeling disconnected upon relocating to LA. Parties tended to lack energy; attendees often lingered with drinks rather than embracing the dance floor’s rhythm. With El Teteo, I sought not only to instill that East Coast vibe into Los Angeles but also promote awareness about Caribbean Latine culture while nurturing an authentic sense of community—something we cherish dearly as New Yorkers who thrive amid diverse influences.
Addressing Representation Challenges
Proudly identifying as Dominican American ignited within me the desire for our narrative to resonate within Los Angeles—a city where our representation felt sparse at best. My transition illuminated just how unfamiliar many were with both Dominicans and Caribbean Latine culture overall—a stark contrast from home where our identity was celebrated unabashedly.
The Inaugural Party: A Cultural Milestone
I launched El Teteo on February 26th—the date commemorating Dominican Independence Day—in LA alongside my partners Angela Carrasco, an accomplished Dominican American realtor navigating LA’s landscape; and actress Katherine Castro. By utilizing their connections with local venues, we attracted over 600 attendees—including guests who flew in specifically from New York—making it an extraordinary celebration!
An Empowering Space for Creatives
These gatherings evolved into more than just festivities—they became essential platforms enabling Latine artists within media and entertainment sectors to connect and forge relationships organically. The true measure of success isn’t solely attendance numbers but lies heavily on shared joy resulting from these communal celebrations that highlight what Latino identity can encompass beyond mainstream media portrayals.
Navigating Hollywood’s Representation Crisis
The pursuit has never been straightforward; facing stereotypes during auditions remains prevalent as casting norms often favor light-skinned actresses over Afro-Latina talent like myself—further perpetuating barriers surrounding diversity recognition even within Hollywood confines itself! Yet through events centering around genuine Dominican beats infusion alongside cultural experiences such as hookah enjoyment have developed crucial spaces fostering authentic representation rather than relying solely on externally imposed narratives.
