In a recent ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles will need to return her bronze medal earned during the floor exercise competition at the Paris Olympics. This follows an unexpected turn regarding an appeal made by her coach concerning her performance score.
Initially finishing in fifth place with a score of 13.666, Chiles saw her rating adjusted after a successful challenge raised it to 13.766—moving her into third position ahead of Romanian competitor Ana Bărbosu. The situation became tense as Bărbosu had begun celebrating what she thought was a podium finish before being displaced.
However, according to CAS findings, the objection filed by Chiles’ coach was submitted just outside of the one-minute timeframe stipulated by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), leading them to revert her score back to its original figure and restoring Bărbosu’s rightful third-place victory.
The ruling has been officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Sunday afternoon.
“The bronze medal will now be awarded to Ana Barbosu from Romania,” stated an IOC press release. They further mentioned coordination with Romania’s National Olympic Committee for arranging a reallocation ceremony while liaising with USOPC regarding returning Chiles’ bronze accolade.
